Site fixes

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Some minor configuration issues popped up when the old database was removed yesterday, the forums and the gallery should be working again now. Latest gallery updates were also lost, this should also be fixed now.

Site transfer complete

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Site is now transfered to the new server, some minor stuff is still broken (and more might break when old database is deleted on Monday) but for the most part things are up and running again. Forums and Coppermine gallery are still available for now, but both will be removed in the near future (forums will be gone for good since they haven’t been used in ages, Coppermine will be replaced with another gallery package).

Site upgrade

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

I’ll be transfering the site to a new service package within the same web host (new service will include “unlimited” storage and no transfer quota). This will likely mean some downtime as database information is transfered and updated. At the same time, I’ll also switch to some other gallery software, as I have found Coppermine’s features somewhat lacking from the beginning.

CAPTCHA

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

Due to very high amount of spam in the comments (and the fact that I’m too lazy to filter them by hand so pretty much everything was just blocked), I have installed a CAPTCHA plugin for comments. Let’s see how well this works out, for now there’s no human moderation.

Site redesign complete

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

The site update is now pretty much complete. There are some small visual issues here and there, but they are pretty minor. The new design is pretty much pure XHTML+CSS, Flash is used for embedded videos and Javascript for Coppermine photo gallery. The site should scale pretty well to a wide range of resolutions and work in all modern browsers. Legacy CSS hacks are kept to a minimum, so the site will likely appear pretty broken in IE6 and other very old browsers.

I’m still working on a proper new theme for the photo gallery, Coppermine design is frankly bit of a mess and creating custom themes for it is not easy as it could be.

WordPress

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

The site update is progressing well, the project has grown bit larger than originally intended, but I’m finally starting to wrap things up.

I have switched over to WordPress publishing platform for news. This means commenting support, easier searching, categories for posts and RSS feeds. And for me, easier site updates. WordPress is used only for news, the rest of the site is still static content (apart from the photo gallery).

Using the news archives, some old backups and the Wayback Machine, I have reconstructed most of the news posts between 2001 and 2009. Unfortunately, I did not originally archive any news posts and I could not find the original site (located under www.dlc.fi) on the Wayback Machine either, so posts from site launch in 1997 to early 2001 are missing. Some minor editing was done to older news posts to make them fit the new site format and I have also either updated or removed broken links.

Finally, Coppermine photo gallery is now integrated with the rest of the site. The integration is bit of a hack, but it should work without any major issues. The forums don’t use the site layout yet, but since they are more or less dead anyway, I might not update them.

Site redesign

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

I have been working on a site redesign for some days now. Still pretty rough around the edges, but things should work smoothly enough for live testing. The new design is pure HTML+CSS, with Flash used for embedded video streams. The site uses some features not supported by IE6, but should work fine in any modern browser.

Coppermine Image gallery has been updated to the latest version to resolve some security issues. In addition, there are also some new photos taken during May Day ’09.

Image galleries back online

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Image galleries are now online, including photos from our video projects. Galleries are based on Coppermine, I’ll see if I can add support for phpBB3 forum accounts on the gallery later.
