Last weekend we were at my aunt’s, taking apart an old brick oven. Quite a few photos from the project are available in the gallery, including quite a few unrelated cat shots taken during the weekend. It was pretty dusty work, and some of the photos are little unfocused as a result.
I worked on a little genealogy project last summer, building a family tree for the Tornio family based on genealogy data gathered by Rakel Kuronen. Main goal of the project was to transfer Rakel’s work of many years to digital format. I also added some more recent information and limited data from my mother’s side. While there are many good solutions available for storing family trees, I decided to develop my own in order to learn some Javascript and Ajax on the side. The basic user interface is pretty basic though (mainly just HTML+CSS), most of the advanced stuff is used on the editing side of things. For displaying database statistics I made heavy use of Google Chart API.
I finished Advanced Open Water Diver course yesterday and I am now rated for dives up to the depth of 30 m. Some photos taken during a break before our night dive can be found in the gallery, unfortunately the photos ended up way too dark to see any details.
Due to very high amount of spam in the comments (and the fact that I’m too lazy to filter them by hand so pretty much everything was just blocked), I have installed a CAPTCHA plugin for comments. Let’s see how well this works out, for now there’s no human moderation.
After quite a few delays, I have finally graduated from the Helsinki University of Technology (which is now part of the Aalto University) as a Master of Science in Technology. My Master’s Thesis on Natural Gradient for Variational Bayesian Learning is available online.
Some photos from the graduation ceremony on Friday 2nd July are available in the gallery. This was a somewhat informal event, the main graduation ceremony was already on Thursday, but because of the great amount of fresh graduates, there was no room to attend it.
Some photos from Midsummer 2010 are available in the gallery. We had no bonfire this year and the weather was rather rainy too, so we spent a lot more time inside than usual.
