While it was too sudden to organize any diving, I still wanted to get to the water and decided to head down to the coast and do some snorkeling.\u00a0After my walk along the coast in January<\/a>\u00a0I have always wanted to pay Black Rock and Half Moon Bay<\/a> a return visit and do some snorkeling there. This was a perfect day for it and the site didn’t disappoint.<\/p>\n

While the pier is frankly too shallow for a proper dive, it’s an excellent snorkeling spot. There were tons of nudibranchs (most I have seen in Melbourne waters), a couple of seahorses, quite a bit of marine growth and some juvenile fish as well. There were some fishermen on the pier, but pretty much all the interesting stuff is under the pier anyway so I didn’t have any issues with lines. I did bang my head on the pier supports a couple of times, though.<\/p>\n

Apart from some equipment issues it was pretty much a perfect trip.\u00a0My drysuit’s neck seal kept leaking a bit, so I wasn’t quite as comfortable as I could be (I still spent well over an hour in the water). In addition I was slightly underweighted, it’s hard to find proper weighting while snorkeling in a drysuit. On one hand you don’t really want to be overweighted (especially when going out alone) but on the other hand staying underwater in shallow water is a real pain without enough weight. After finding a metal pipe under the pier and tugging it under my weight belt things improved and I was able to snatch some pretty nice shots.<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_1_placeholder\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
